Jeff Grant
An Elizabeth Petrov Thriller
The Russians have developed a weapons system so powerful and deadly that it could alter the balance of power on Earth—and in space.
When the CIA learns that Russia's breakthrough may soon become operational, the agency turns to an unlikely recruit: Dr. Elizabeth Petrov, a brilliant Caltech physics graduate working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. A former model rocket enthusiast who earned her Ph.D. at an extraordinary pace, Elizabeth is one of the nation's leading experts in hypersonic flight, where vehicles travel at more than five times the speed of sound.
Born in Russia and brought to the United States as a toddler by her grandfather, Elizabeth speaks Russian like a native. Her rare combination of language skills, scientific expertise, and cultural background makes her uniquely qualified for a mission that could determine the future of global security.
Initially captivated by the CIA's cutting-edge technology and sophisticated tradecraft, Elizabeth eagerly answers her country's call. But when she stumbles upon evidence of criminal activity involving a powerful American businessman, she discovers why Washington, D.C., is often called "the Swamp."
As she navigates a dangerous world of deception, corruption, and political intrigue, Elizabeth risks everything—including the lives of those she loves most: her grandfather and her girlfriend—to uncover the truth and do what is right.
The Swamp is the first novel in the Elizabeth Petrov Thriller series by Jeff Grant, who served for 21 years with the CIA and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). During his intelligence career, Grant worked at the highest levels of technological intelligence collection. After leaving government service, he entered the private sector, most recently serving as Vice President and General Manager of Space Systems at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.
Before publication, The Swamp was reviewed by the CIA and approved for release.
Early Praise for The Swamp
"This is fiction, but I wonder if some people in that most fiction-filled place, Washington, will feel that Jeff Grant is traveling a little too close to the truth. Anyway, you'll want to go with him. Grant takes you on a journey into the heart and the guts and the cerebral cortex and the lizard brain of espionage."
— P. J. O'Rourke, author of Holidays in Hell and Republican Party Reptile
What Former Senior Government Officials Are Saying
"Jeff Grant has written a spellbinding spy mystery with an unnerving resonance to today's events. As an insider, he has infused the novel with authenticity and realism, creating a compelling, fast-paced thriller. I was left wanting more and eagerly await the next installment."
— James Clapper, retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant general and former Director of National Intelligence
"A fast-paced, action-packed spy thriller filled with suspense and intrigue. The author, a CIA insider, weaves a tale that is both compelling and authentic. Espionage, politics, diplomacy, romance, technology, and the battle between good and evil come together through a series of unexpected twists. I can't wait for the sequel."
— Joanne Isham, former Deputy Director, CIA Directorate of Science and Technology
"This astute thriller blends tradecraft, technology, and human intrigue to reveal the extraordinary lengths governments will go to gain the upper hand. When it looks too simple, look again."
— The Honorable Jeffrey K. Harris, former Assistant Secretary of the Air Force and former Director of the National Reconnaissance Office
