(A dirt poor farming family with a young daughter growing up in rural British Columbia is befriended by a first nation family shunned by the rest of the community. Filled with useful household tips- including the cure for death by lightning, it comprable with life death and the whole dam thing. However there is a far more sinister feel to this book which tackles the issue if child abuse in a thoughful and frightening way. Weaved with first nation stories of shifters people who change from animal to human, this is a rich and complex story of growing up, racism, abuse and a rural way of life. Think of Like Chocolate for water mixed with a simple story of farming folk mixed up with a dash of fairy tale. Jst when you thought it could all be too heavy you find this is also a very funny book)
