In early 1917, several attempts by Allied Forces to invade Turkish Palestine along the ancient Coastal route through Gaza ended in disaster. The British government, desperate for a victory, replaced the commander of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and ordered that Jerusalem be captured by the end of the year. A daring plan was devised to attack the Holy Land through Beer Sheba, a drab and muddy village at the very edge of the collapsing Turkish empire. The fate of the Middle East and the world hinged on the results of the brief and fierce battle at Beer Sheba between the entrenched Turkish defenders and the Allied invaders. This is the story of some of those who planned and participated in that battle - their hopes, dreams, and disappointments.
